About the Event

On September 12th, representatives of the GIB, multilateral organizations, civil society, the private sector, the financial sector, academia and other decision-makers will gather to explore innovative strategies that leverage a bioeconomy that is positive for the planet and communities.

This event will bring together leading stakeholders from multilateral organizations, the financial sector, civil society, academia, and government to explore innovative methods for leveraging the bioeconomy as a sustainable alternative to traditional economic models.

Discussions will focus on the financing of the bioeconomy and how it can be advanced through innovation, regulation, international cooperation, and national strategies. The event aims to further the goal of implementing a bioeconomy that benefits the climate, nature, and people.

Background

The bioeconomy is growing with many predicting that it could soon accelerate to around US$30 trillion from its current estimated size of US$4-5 trillion. Major economies including Brazil, China, the EU, India, and the USA have ambitious bioeconomy growth targets, with growing interest across the Global South.

However, despite the potential of the bioeconomy, it has not yet been integrated into the global mainstream finance and real economy, intensifying the misalignment between what we need and our current economic practices.

In late 2023, during its G20 presidency, the Brazilian government proposed the bioeconomy as a key agenda item through the launch of the unprecedented Bioeconomy Initiative (GIB). To effectively address the intertwined climate and nature crises, it is crucial for the bioeconomy to scale up rapidly, and this requires significant financial investment.

NatureFinance and event partners will host sessions focused on the Bioeconomy:

  • The Global Bioeconomy: What is It and How to Finance It?
  • Financing a Diverse Bioeconomy: A Holistic Vision for Climate, Nature, and People
  • Financing the Bioeconomy at the G20 and Beyond: Challenges and Opportunities
  • Nature Based Solutions and the G20 official agenda

Guiding Questions for the Panels and Workshops Include:

  1. What are the financial instruments and innovations available to finance the bioeconomy, and what are the current market trends and segmentation?
  2. How large and mature is the bioeconomy market, and what progress is being made by the G20 Bioeconomy Initiative?
  3. What is the significance of including High-Level Principles on Bioeconomy in the G20 Final Communique?
  4. How does the bioeconomy agenda align with the upcoming UN Biodiversity (COP 16) and Climate (COP 30) Conferences?

While this is a closed-door, in-person event, a live stream of the morning panels, including the launch of the “Financing the Bioeconomy” report, will be available to the general public closer to the date of the event. To access this live stream, please register your expression of interest here.
